Woodberry Day Nursery & Pre-School - Peartree is an OFSTED GOOD (2024) nursery in Bitterne, Southampton, on Peartree Avenue between Bitterne and Woolston. With a car park and secure intercom entry, our purpose-built nursery backs onto ancient woodland and cares for children from 3 months to 5 years. Our strong safeguarding and nurturing care build lasting confidence in every child.
Our caring practitioners guide child-led play and encourage critical thinking through meaningful experiences. Our bright rooms flow directly to gardens, creating seamless indoor-outdoor discovery we know children love.

All meals are freshly prepared on site each day using quality, seasonal ingredients. Our menus are developed with expert guidance, designed for inclusion, and go beyond Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. We want every child to become a confident, curious eater.

Hayley James

Hi, I’m Hayley! I’ve worked in early years for 18 years and now support settings as a Nursery Development Manager. I’m especially passionate about Special Educational Needs, and I recently completed a foundation degree in this area. I love helping teams create inclusive, inspiring environments where every child feels supported and can reach their full potential. I’m passionate about helping practitioners grow in confidence and ensuring every child gets the best possible start in life.

Review of Woodberry Day Nursery & Pre-School (Peartree)

Woodberry staff have been amazing with my daughter, they have ensured all her care needs are met and ensured that she has settled well into nursery. As a mum with a daughter who has health conditions ( cmpa, Laryngomalacia, difficulty with swallow and high risk choking and aspirating) the staff spent time understanding my daughter's needs and ensured there was a care plan in place and all staff was aware and had a good level of understanding around her conditions. They give in-depth handovers, are easy to talk to and show a real care and nurturing nature towards my daughter. The manager at Woodberry is very bright incredibly happy, welcoming everyone in to the nursery. She ensures she has time to discuss any concerns and is always available/ visible. The baby room staff are welcoming, ensuring the handover from parent to key worker goes smoothly, ensures the children are nurtured, mimick routine from home, ensure the children are engaged in activities.

I can tell you with complete certainty that there is no chance I would ever change my boys nursery. They come home from nursery beaming about their days, they have so much fun and are kept so engaged. I don't have a single complaint about any of the staff, they all treat my kids with such love and support I am 100% comfortable leaving them in nursery and never once have I been concerned about any aspect of how they're cared for. If I have ever had any issues/concerns I have brought them up with the staff and they have always resolved them for me (sometimes going way above and beyond) and always do it with a smile - nothing is ever too much. All staff are so willing to work alongside me in helping my boys developments in any way that I could ask - whether it be potty training, resistance to tooth brushing, fussy eating, building friendships etc. The staff have always taken away any of my concerns and worked on them to help us. 10/10 warm, nurturing and welcoming environment.

I can't recommend this nursery more! My little one has been at Peartree for 9 months and she has been so happy and excited to go to nursery every day from the get go. The staff are all so friendly, welcoming and actually seem to really know my little one. It has such a family feel to it! The staff seem genuinely interested when I tell them the latest interests and activities my little one is into and have created activities at the nursery tailored to these!! Incredible!! My little one has been developing incredibly through the support of the nursery, absolutely smashing milestones and already developing a love of learning. The staff have not just been friendly and supportive to my child, they have also been a kind and supportive bunch when I have had a hard time personally and offered genuine shoulder to cry on and chat to. The fantastic staff at this nursery are real hero's and the joy and enthusiasm they bring every day is absolutely priceless!

Woodberry Peartree is a wonderful nursery. My daughter absolutely loves going there. She had learnt so much in such a short time. The staff is compassionate, creating a warm and nurturing environment for the children. The curriculum is engaging and age-appropriate, contributing to my child's cognitive, social, and emotional development. I couldn't ask for better communication. They are really responsive to any queries and providing regular updates on my child's activities and learning progress. We attended the recent graduation event which was a wonderful celebration for all those who were off to school this year. A really well-run event with music, face paint, stalls, ice cream, games, singing - so much going on! There were some last-minute changes due to the wonderful British weather, which were all handled very professionally and smoothly. A great celebration event!

Woodberry Peartree is a wonderful nursery/preschool. The workers really care about the children and put in so much time and thought into planning learning opportunities in a fun and engaging way. In July they ran a family fun day which included preschool graduation party. They put in lots of effort to make it a fun and memorable day for everyone and even with last-minute changes due to the weather still ran a really successful event making children and parents feel really valued.

My daughter had to leave this nursery as they couldn’t offer any extra days as I had changed my job. So I had to move my daughter to the nursery in Sholing. The manager at Peartree said she would let me know when any extra days are available. Turns out they do not keep a waiting list. I found out today that a child in Sholing is moving over to Peartree for the full 5 days. Now they say they have no spaces left. Peartree is walking distance from our home, it takes forever to get my daughter over to the Sholing each morning then make it into work on time in town. I am very dissatisfied and disappointed that the staff at Peartree are not truthful.

Review of Woodberry Day Nursery & Pre-School (Peartree)

Our daughter has attended Woodberry Peartee since January 2021 and we couldn't be happier. She is currently thriving in the preschool room, but also loved the under 2s and toddler room. All the staff are friendly, polite and engaging and most of all genuinely care about the children's development, safety and care. It's usually a struggle to get our daughter to leave as she has had so much fun and I am sure her abilities have and continue to improve at an increased rate due to the staff's input. Overall we couldn't be happier with this setting and the staff.

Both our children have attended this nursery and overall have had an excellent experience. The staff in the room have created welcoming and fun environments and both of them have settled in well. The range of activities is very good and the rooms and garden are fantastic environments for children. Communication from the management/director team can be impersonal with a lack of clear explanation for decisions. I have raised this with them and I’m sure they will endeavour to improve this.

Review of Woodberry Day Nursery & Pre-School (Peartree)

Can't fault this nursery setting! My boy joined during the pandemic, after what had been a pretty tough year after he was born in lockdown. The staff have been so supportive and my boy has thrived in their setting which is a huge relief after he missed out on so much interaction in his first twelve months. He loves his key worker, talks about her and the other staff a lot at home which I think speaks volumes! The updates are great - both the daily contacts and also observations about his learning and development. The setting is wonderfully equipped and I particularly love the outdoor space. The menu is also great - my son eats so well there, such a varied and healthy mix of meals and snacks. It's clear that they care about health and nutrition and I also think the quality of food adds to the value for money. Cannot wait to enjoy the facilities to the fullest as we move out of the pandemic and I can get to experience the nursery more!

We have always been so impressed with Woodberry, whether it's the quality of provision, their caring nature, the dedication of staff or the fact our son runs in in the morning and is reluctant to leave in the afternoon! Nursery provision is obviously a large expense for a family but there are no hidden extra costs, like some other providers and I really do feel Woodberry provide good value for what we pay.

I cannot express just how extremely pleased with Woodberry Peartree I am. My daughter attended this nursery from 2016 to 2019 and it was an absolute no brainer that I would also enrol my son at the setting. Since my son has started I am so pleased with the nurture, care and education that he receives. The staff at the nursery go above and beyond for the needs of my child as well as accommodating me with any additional situations that have arisen. His speech has come on leaps and bounds since starting the preschool. His keyworker took on the notes from his speech referral and has created a plan for him that is working so well. So many of my family and friends have commented on his speech progression and it's thanks to you all.

My son and daughter are both at Woodberry and have been for almost a year now. We moved from another local nursery which was good but I have to say Woodberry has exceeded all my expectations. My kids are always happy to go and love the staff. The manager is always flexible and has helped me with dietary requirements, change of days etc. The thing which impresses me most about the nursery is that staff go above and beyond to create opportunities for learning and development and really put the children at the centre of everything they do. The food is also really thought through and full of goodness. They are always asking for feedback, input from the children, and ways to improve. We are so happy we chose Woodberry.

I found the nursery to be very cold and unhelpful when flexibility was needed. The management of the nursery is very poor, the focus is clearly monetary driven and not education. Child development reports are always late and therefore had very little relevance at the time of publishing.

We have nothing but praise for the staff at Woodberry Day Nursery (Peartree) Ltd. Our son joined later than originally planned due to Covid restrictions. We were worried about him settling in and being surrounded by children (having spent much of his life in lockdown due to us shielding). We needn't have worried. We were offered settling-in sessions and a named key worker to liaise with. Our son adores the staff (and the delicious-sounding food!). He has the best time there and we love getting the regular photos and updates about the activities that take place.

My little boy is due to start full days for four days a week next week. Being a lock down baby he has had to have a few extra settling in sessions. I cannot be more thankful for how amazing the team have been helping him to settle in. The deputy manager has not only put my mind at rest but some how managed to win over my little one, who hasn’t seen anyone other than myself, partner and nanny throughout lockdown. My two-year-old son loves going to Woodberry Day Nursery. All staff are so passionate in what they do and they have always made sure that my son is happy when he goes. He has such a lovely bond with his key worker. We started during the Covid-19 restrictions and we were worried that it would take him a while to settle because he was at home for such a long time but when he started, the staff worked amazingly well to make him feel comfortable and happy. The detail they go into and the child observations are just excellent and it is so nice to read. They use an app where you can see what your child has been up to during the day and it is so nice to be able to talk to your child about it and show them photos after you collect them. My son has learnt so much since he started attending back in September 2020. The facilities are also top-notch, really spacious indoors and the best garden and play area. It is so nice to see my son coming out at the end of his session with a big smile on his face.

Our children are very well looked after at Woodberry Day Nursery (Peartree) Ltd and clearly love their time at school. Their key workers in particular have been wonderful, our older child has had five different in his time so far and each has been as caring and thorough as the last. The outdoor space is brilliant! Who does not love a pirate ship! Yes, a pirate ship! The staff are very supportive with advice and help regarding toilet training. The food is far better than my lunch! The staff up to and including the deputy manager are one and all excellent. Unfortunately, the setting manager has changed three times while we have been there and the last two were not helpful. However, the current manager seems to be such an improvement and has worked with us with great professionalism in dealing with dietary requirements. Hopefully, overall management has turned a corner. ‘Likely’ to refer because overall brilliant care of children but communication of management could be vastly improved.

Our son has been at Woodberry nursery for three years. The interaction with the children from nursery to preschool has been superb. Learning is interactive and fun and our son looks forward to going to Woodberry every day. Children are taught to be kind, caring and helpful. Our son will be leaving for school in September after 3 very happy years at Woodberry. He has been very content there, he is sociable but doesn’t ‘dive right in’ and takes a while to adapt to change but they have been great with that. He has had a variety of keyworkers over the years but I think that goes with the territory and isn’t a reflection on Woodberry. They have all been lovely. The garden, in particular, is a wonderful space including the barn area where they can still be outside, even in the rain. I have no other nursery to compare Woodberry with, but would definitely recommend it.

My child loves attending nursery. She is very social, plays a lot with children and has strong bonding with the staff. She feels safe there. Staff are flexible and hard working. They accepted washable nappies and our wish to reduce single-use plastic. I have good experiences with management too, their communication and helpfulness is great.

My son joined the nursery from March and now he enjoys attending it a lot. He learns quite a lot of skills at the nursery, such as eating by himself, drinking by himself, speaking some English words (we speak Chinese at home). He likes his carers and made friends there. He has become more confident after joining the nursery. We used to get face-to-face feedback from his carers in March, now we received written feedback every day via Tapestry. We're happy to get to know his day at the nursery and his development. The only thing that we notice is that he may need to be provided with more food. Other than this, the nursery is all perfect.

Our little one has recently started at Woodberry, Peartree and we couldn't be happier with them. They provided an excellent settling in and introduction to nursery life, despite it being mid lockdown. They are kind and caring, supportive and approachable. Our little one toddles in every day and comes out just as happy (but exhausted from all the fun). Their handovers are great and you can ask them all sorts of questions or share any worries about your little one. It's a fantastic nursery with highly skilled staff.

Review of Woodberry Day Nursery & Pre-School (Peartree)

My son has attended Woodberry for over two and a half years. We are sad that it is almost time for him to leave due to starting school. He has learnt so much here not just academically but socially and life skills too. He has loved his time here and we are looking forward to his younger brother starting too.
