Woodberry Day Nursery & Pre-School (Sholing) is an OFSTED GOOD (2023) nursery in Sholing, Southampton, on Botley Road off Portsmouth and Bursledon Roads. Near the M27 with a car park, our converted home nursery offers care for children from 3 months to 5 years across four large rooms. Strong safeguarding and nurturing care foster steady development and confidence for all children.
Our experienced team builds strong bonds that promote smooth teamwork and emotional growth. Homely spaces provide generous room for imaginative play, quiet moments and daily routines.
Our two large gardens enable free-flow access with diverse textures including decking for running, Astroturf for active play, soft surfaces for safe tumbling, brick patio for group activities and wooden decking for exploration. Long-term team members ensure trusted continuity and familiarity.

Nutritional Approach

We believe food is fundamental to healthy growth, happy minds, and positive lifelong habits. In the earliest years, what children eat shapes taste preferences, supports brain development, and lays the foundations for long-term health.

All meals are freshly prepared on site each day using quality, seasonal ingredients. Our menus are developed with expert guidance, designed for inclusion, and go beyond Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. We want every child to become a confident, curious eater.

Zoe Becket

I joined the nursery in June 2018 and have progressed through my career within the setting, starting as Preschool Deputy Room Leader and working my way up to Nursery Manager, a role I am very excited about.

I have worked in childcare for 13 years and hold a Level 3 childcare qualification from Itchen College. I love watching children grow and develop, from our babies to confident preschoolers, and building strong relationships with families.

Our dedicated, long-standing team and our spacious, well-resourced gardens are what I love most about our nursery, supporting children’s learning, independence, and development in all weathers.

My two children had an amazing time there. All members of staff looked after them and helped them grow. They also have knowledge on children development and understand children's developmental journey. They also supported is during difficult times when I was ill. They didn't support my children only, they supported the entire family! Highly recommend!

My son has been going to the nursery since he was 13 months old and he's going to be starting reception this year so we've had good experience of the nursery over the last 3 or 4 years. The staff have always been amazing, you can tell they really care for the children, the food choices are always great and he always has such fun when he is there. I will say that since the new manager has taken over as nursery manager it has got even better and any issues with the previous management, such as communication have gone. I would absolutely recommend this nursery to anyone looking to send their child.

Staff are absolutely lovely. My 15 month old little boy has made friends, sleeps better after being at nursery, is well fed and his social skills have come on leaps and bounds since attending Oct 2024 until present. He rarely shows any reluctance to attend since day one and smiles when I tell him it's nursery day. My partner also had a stroke recently and everyone was fantastic and supportive. Highly recommend!

We have had such a wonderful experience with this nursery! The staff are incredibly caring and nurturing, making my little boy feel safe and comfortable every step of the way. They handled his transition between rooms with so much care, ensuring it was at his own pace and that he was fully ready. Me and my husband were looking at different nurseries to move our son too, then management changed and everything else seemed to change too. The weird atmosphere was gone. Staff members seemed more upbeat. The actions that have already been put in place by new management are incredible, it's amazing what the management seem to of achieved in a short space of time. The communication is WONDERFUL and what every child's parent wants when putting their trust into these practitioners to give my son and all the other children the highest level of care. I cannot fault the pre school team and new management whatsoever, we love them!

Overall the nursery is really good , staff are friendly and are always willing to answer any questions and help in anyway that they can . My child has been here for the last 7/8 months and has really thrived in the environment. The menus that are offered are healthy and home cooked and also dietary requirements are catered if needed . The app is very helpful with communications ,invoices and the daily diary of what your child has eaten.

I couldn't recommend this nursery highly enough. Both my children have attended here, my daughter from 2020-2023 and my son currently attends. My eldest has a disability and they went out of their way to help her feel included in all the activities in a safe way. Ensuring there was somebody with her when in the play area or to encourage her speech and physio. Even now, when she joins me for pick-up, she is welcomed with open arms and a cuddle. My son loves his time here and is eager to join in which makes the drop-off process more enjoyable and stress-free. He eats a full variety of different foods. The little friendships he has made are sweet to witness and the staff are so interactive with him. Reading stories and many fun activities with sand or water. The setting is clean and hygienic and the staff are friendly and easy to speak to. There are always many staff in sight. Overall, I feel we have chosen the best nursery for our children and are very grateful for everything they do.

I strongly advise against sending your children to this nursery. Their food and hygiene standards are extremely poor, and the facility has been closed multiple times due to safety violations, which can be verified on the Ofsted website.

My daughter has attended Woodberry, Sholing since she was 2 years old. She has had every support that a child needs to grow and flourish. She is starting school soon and is experiencing some changes in her home life, all staff have been fantastic in supporting her. Particularly, the preschool room their patience and understanding have helped me and my daughter greatly. I highly recommend Woodberry, Sholing.

The team at Woodberry are truly amazing! My two daughters have both blossomed so well here and have made such lovely bonds with their key workers and other staff in the rooms. The staff are so helpful and attentive to the children. They are always happy to discuss your child’s development and are all so friendly and approachable. Both my daughters have come on leaps and bounds with their development since attending nursery, especially their speech. The girls in Caterpillars do a brilliant job teaching the babies Makaton signs to aid their communication from a young age. The staff in pre-school are brilliant and are always doing fun and educational activities with the children. My 3-year-old is doing so well at writing the letters of her name. Woodberry Sholing is a fantastic nursery with lovely staff, I would highly recommend!

My child is very happy at Woodberry Sholing and is met with warmth and cuddles when she is dropped off. She engages in fun activities and eats a lovely range of meals. She is always happy at pickup and buzzing if a little shattered from her full day! The Early Years practitioners in the toddler room(2 year old) are friendly, fun and are approachable. My child loves them! My eldest was in Woodberry back in 2019, until 2022 and thrived in the preschool room, they were amazing with her. Now my youngest is halfway through her journey. Many of the staff are still present from my eldest time at Woodberry. As a parent of 2, I wholly recommend Woodberry Sholing for all ages.

Great nursery for my daughter, the staff in the baby room are brilliant with my child, she didn’t settle straight away going to nursery but the staff have been brilliant in ensuring she had lots of cuddles and developed a bond with her. One staff member is an exceptional key worker who I believe has really helped with my daughter's development within the nursery. Overall the nursery is brilliant with communication with my daughter and is always there to support her with anything needed for my daughter.

Review of Woodberry Day Nursery & Pre-School (Sholing)

As of August 2023, this nursery has now been rated as "Inadequate" in all 4 areas (personal development; leadership & management, quality of education; behaviour and attitudes) by Ofsted. The Ofsted report also remarked how poor the hygiene standards were at this setting, how pre-school children were often unsupervised, and that staff were not familiar with safeguarding principles. As a parent, when I tried to point out to the staff that the setting smelled bad, they told me that they couldn't smell it. My child got sick very often during the one year she went to this pre-school, which I have no doubt is due to the poor hygiene. It's great to see that some parents are content with the services provided based on other reviews on this webpage, but I recommend you do your due diligence before enrolling your child in this (or any) childcare setting.

Review of Woodberry Day Nursery & Pre-School (Sholing)

Most of the staff are lovely and they have some interesting routines (e.g. they plant veg in their growth patch; a chef cooks the meals). But I would not recommend it to other parents, largely because of the poor management and communication with parents. A few days after my daughter started at this nursery, the manager called me about a skin infection she had at the time, grilling me with questions in a very aggressive and unnecessarily rude manner. The next time I interacted with the person about cold weather clothing (the children were outdoors with no coats or shoes on in Feb), the manager was equally as confrontational. The "graduation" party for pre-schoolers was another example of poor organization and communication. The "ceremony" consisted of 10 minutes of singing and being handed a diploma. And yet we were asked to come 3 hours before the ceremony and had to wait around with no food or any organized activities on a rainy day.

Our son started nursery at 2.5 years. We are extremely proud of what he has become - an independent, confident and compassionate young man. His overall development has been wonderful, including his self-feeding, self-hygiene and social skills. All credits go to the team of Woodberry Day Nursery for their learnings, activities and motivation. The key worker kept us informed about his progress through the nursery app which was very useful, especially on his daily meal update. We are ever so grateful for the comforts, smiles, cuddles and bonds shared with our son. He will be starting his new school journey soon and surely, will miss you all. My daughter started at such a young age and it was scary at first leaving my baby and there was definitely a month of us both (mainly me) getting used to it but at Woodberry they have been exceptional at keeping me reassured and have been amazing at communicating with me. She’s now been with them for 7 months and has excelled, she’s hitting milestones much earlier, she’s so chatty when she gets home after nursery and has often cried when she’s got to leave. An absolutely amazing setting. Every day our son comes home excited to tell me about his time with his key worker and friends. His development has been outstanding and his ability to process his feelings and discuss with the setting adults is lovely to see. A special thank you always to his key worker, our son adores her so much and if we are ever, on a rare day having trouble getting him away from his toys and out the door, a mention of her and he excitedly runs for the door. The updates from the rooms are fantastic and the varied menu and group eating takes away the stress of providing a varied meal at the end of the day every day and we couldn't ask for more.

Our daughter has been attending Woodberry Sholing Nursery for almost a year now, she was 11-months-old when she started. Since day one, the nursery team has been supportive and professional; after a few warming-up sessions with our baby, a key worker was assigned to take care of her for the first months so that she can form a special relationship and feel secure. Through the months the team helped her develop into a confident and loving child who is excited to go to play with her friends and learn new skills. The nursery's meal plan (varied, healthy and cooked on-site) and environment (homely and clean) were the key factors to choosing that setting. The range of activities for the children is impressive and focused on exploration and natural stimulation. We are very happy with the professionalism and care of Woodberry's staff especially given the challenges related to Covid-19 and thankful to the whole team for their hard work, guidance and genuine affection towards our child.

My son has been with Woodberry Day Nursery - Sholing since October 2020. When we started, the team were extremely accommodating given the status of the pandemic at the time. We were able to view the setting in a safe manner and talk to his key person about his needs. Throughout the time he has been there, we have received regular updates on his activities via the app, including Early Years Foundation Stage observations and photos. The app has also allowed us to keep up to date with changing regulations, update any of our own changes as necessary and interact with the staff and other parents to an extent. Implementations such as a virtual doorbell and masks at the door have helped us feel safe and while we have a quick update at handover, we're given opportunities to meet with the setting should we desire. Our son is happy and healthy here and his development is noticeable. Thank you, Woodberry.

Both our son and daughter have and do attend Woodberry and we could not be happier with how staff have nurtured their development and shown genuine care for us as a family. Our daughter's speech was delayed due to lockdowns and shielding. As soon as she started at nursery she came on leaps and bounds in all areas and has since been discharged from speech therapy as the therapist says she is exactly where she needs to be for her age now. We can’t thank the nursery staff enough for this. We feel the way Covid has been handled at the setting has been reassuring and communication around this has been very clear at all times.

Lovely place where staff go above and beyond to support children in their care. They have a lovely garden with loads of outdoor fun. As a mother, I felt listened to by the staff and my son says that they are ‘very kind’ and ‘really very happy’. They identify specific interests which the child has and encourage them to follow their interests. I’m so grateful for the observations which they make on each kid on their app, which makes us feel that they are treated as individuals. To the team at Woodberry, thank you loads for your hard work.

Thanks to the staff at Woodberry Day Nursery, we have been seeing improvements in the way that our daughter interacts with others, communicates and likes to get involved with being creative and helpful at home. The staff always give us a helpful update on our daughter's day and the use of the app keeps us informed of her nutrition. The staff take a genuine interest in our daughter's needs and likes/dislikes, which gives us great peace of mind and means she looks forward to her days here! My son has attended Woodberry since he was 7 months old and has just turned 3. He is excited to go to nursery every single day and see his friends and the staff members in the grasshopper room. We have used Woodberry Day Nursery for all three of our children. Our eldest son was there from 2010, our youngest son from 2012 and our daughter from 2020. We knew we wanted our daughter to attend Woodberry as our sons had such a great time there. Everyone is so caring and professional. The standards are very high and the amount our boys learnt throughout their time there helped set them up for school so well. Our daughter has so much fun but is learning new things every time she is there. She makes friends and has so much to tell us when we pick her up. I would absolutely recommend Woodberry Day Nursery.

We’ve used this nursery over the last four years for first my daughter and then my son. Both children have loved their time at nursery and have formed genuine attachments to the staff and key workers. We are always kept informed of their progression and milestones even with parents not being able to access the nursery due to covid. We have found all the staff to be friendly and caring, and I would highly recommend the nursery.

Both of our children have attended this setting, with our younger currently in preschool there. We are so delighted with the experience we have had over the years and whilst there have been some staff changes this has not impacted the experience or care our children have received. The nursery has a real personal family feel and the love and care for the children is evident in how happy our children have been. Our youngest quite often cried leaving nursery as he is having too much fun so that in itself tells you how good it is rated. We have never experienced any issues and if there were, we are confident the staff would deal with it promptly. The approach to COVID and precautions have been brilliant and reassuring and the use of the app to communicate real-time messages is an added bonus.

Our little boy absolutely loves it at Woodberry. He talks excitedly about going to nursery and is happily ready at the door with his bag on each morning that we set off - we couldn’t ask for me. We actually moved to Woodberry after it didn’t work out at another setting. For some reason, our little one just wasn’t happy where he initially was and it was so hard leaving him and knowing he fretted so much. So after the decision to move, he began at Woodberry and the difference was unbelievable. Although there were a few tears at drop-offs, to begin with, within weeks he was completely settled and happily waving us off. He now bounds into nursery chatting away and is always so excited on pick up as he tells me about his day. The staff at Woodberry are exceptional and he has been extremely lucky to have such wonderful key workers. From eating anything to potty training going so smoothly to naps being a success, every member of staff has been so supportive. He loves it here and so do we!

Review of Woodberry Day Nursery & Pre-School (Sholing)

The staff are fantastic. The care they give my daughter is superb and considering she previously went to an Ofsted Outstanding nursery, I really do believe Woodberry are better. The facilities and the range of toys she has to play with are excellent, and she is shown so much care. She is developing wonderfully and I really do see a true partnership between myself and the nursery. I recommend them to anyone looking for a day nursery!

We couldn't be happier with the care and levels of learning we have experienced with Woodberry Day Nursery from the under 2's to the pre-school. Our daughter is thriving there. She happily talks about her friends, the activities that she has done and the staff who make it all happen.
