Nutritional Approach

We believe food is fundamental to healthy growth, happy minds, and positive lifelong habits. In the earliest years, what children eat shapes taste preferences, supports brain development, and lays the foundations for long-term health.

All meals are freshly prepared on site each day using quality, seasonal ingredients. Our menus are developed with expert guidance, designed for inclusion, and go beyond Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. We want every child to become a confident, curious eater.

Jo Goddard

Hello, I'm Jo. I joined The Bourne End Day Nursery & Pre-School in 2013. I have a BA Honours Degree in Early Years Practice and a wealth of knowledge and experience working with children in preschool and nursery settings for the last 16 years.

I took on a role at a local preschool providing one-to-one support for a child with additional needs. Since then, I have dedicated my time to working with children and their families, ensuring exceptional care tailored to each child's needs. I am passionate about their development and providing a broad variety of experiences for all children.

Our Curriculum

At Bourne End, we transform the lives of the children and families we work with by creating an environment that supports learning. Our curriculum focuses on three key areas.

I cannot say enough brilliant things about this nursery. My daughter has been going full time for 3 years now and the environment is nurturing, fun and warm. The manager and the team are diligent about all aspects of safeguarding and care deeply about each child. The staffing has been broadly consistent since we've been attending and I think that's credit to the manager and her management team who create a team people want to work with.

Our son has attended Little Garden Day Nursery since he was a year old. He really enjoys going to nursery each day and we have been really pleased with the excellent care he has received. The activities and opportunities available to him are varied and exciting and he particularly enjoys the outdoor facilities and outsourced providers that visit the nursery. We would really recommend The Little Garden Nursery to others!

Excellent staff, with a calm friendly atmosphere at drop-off, and fun happy atmosphere at pick-up. Great range of foods and encouraging independence in serving and eating. Love the classes that are provided - Music and French. Occasional soreness when not completely wiped clean after toilet.

My son has been at the nursery for nearly 1.5 years. He is so happy there and has a great relationship with his key worker and his peers. We get brilliant updates about his progress and the weekend sessions and Christmas parties that the team put on are a fantastic way to stay in touch. The team work so hard, finding activities such as arts and crafts supplies to fit the themes of each even that they put on.

I have two children at this nursery and both thoroughly enjoy their time there. The staff are amazing, they are all super friendly and genuinely care about each child which creates a lovely family feel. I get photos on the app every day and love seeing the variety of things the children are up to. My eldest is going to school later this year and having seen all the guidance the school have given about what the children need to be able to do I am so grateful to the nursery for preparing him and making sure his transition will be smooth. My experience has always been positive but has been further improved by the current manager who has made a great impact on the nursery, injecting a new energy and ensuring a child-first focus.

From the moment we decided to move our daughter from another nursery to Little Garden, we have been continually impressed by the warm, welcoming atmosphere and the dedication of the staff. The nursery staff are dedicated, nurturing, and highly skilled, providing a stimulating environment where children can thrive. We particularly love the nursery's emphasis on hands-on activities, outdoor play, and interactive learning as it ensures our little person is engaged and excited to come in each day! Safeguarding, welfare, and hygiene standards are impeccable and on our own experience of another setting and viewing all alternate settings in the local area - far exceed the competition! This really does give us total peace of mind that our child is in a secure and healthy environment. The staff communicate effectively with parents via an app and verbally keeping us informed about our child's daily activities and developmental milestones - which is very much valued and appreciated! We love this nursery and cannot thank them enough for how well they have cared for our daughter. Unfortunately, she suffers from a health condition that requires extra monitoring/a care plan. The staff and management have been amazing in looking after her and making us, as nervous parents feel reassured. She loves going to nursery and she adores the staff. If you want to send your child to a place where the staff care for them as if they are their own children, then this is the one!

The Bourne End Day Nursery is a happy place where my child has enjoyed his time over the past 3 years. My child started at the nursery when he was 9 months old and is leaving for school soon. He has been happy at all the stages and loved his teachers in each room. I feel the nursery has a lovely family friendly feeling. The head of the nursery is attentive, kind and proactive. The staff are all down to earth, approachable and kind. My child’s key carer is imaginative and makes every day fun and enjoyable. I feel the nursery is equipping my child for his next chapter (school) while still letting my child be a child. They balance learning with fun and invest in the development of my child. I have been very happy with the nursery and would highly recommend Little Garden.

This is an outstanding nursery that is very well run. The team strike the perfect balance of being very caring but also highly professional, and the communication with parents is excellent. Our little boy moved here aged two and a half from another nursery (where we hadn't had the best experience) in July of this year. The manager and the team did an amazing job of settling him in and accommodating his every need. Since joining, his confidence and communication skills have grown exponentially and he is genuinely excited to go in every morning. We get photos of his activities on the app almost daily and we are invited in regularly for stay and plays. It might be slightly more expensive than some nurseries, but then the quality shows in the amazing staff and the responsive way in which the nursery is run.

My son (1year) started nursery a month and a half ago. Management and ‘baby room’ staff have been absolutely amazing. We were given support and flexibility to lead our son’s settling in. We were able to focus on what worked for our family. As a result, we achieved an easy transition to the nursery. Phones and emails are being answered all the time. (One of my red flags when picking a nursery). This shows how attentive the staff are. The environment is clean, organised and content. I love that they have appropriate toys allowing for good motor development and cognitive stimulation. There is a separate sleeping area which in my opinion, is absolutely essential (regardless of where the child chooses to sleep). The Garden is beautiful, safe and fun. You can always smell fresh food in the nursery. I can tell he loves the food there. I could not compliment the staff enough. They are attentive and sensitive to child and parent. Review comes from a mum who happens to be a specialist psychologist.

Our daughter joined the nursery when she was just over a year old. The care and support from the team in Baby Nest has been incredible. The staff are very kind and really take the time to talk to you at drop off and pick off. They seem to know each individual child’s needs and always work with you in ensuring each child is hitting their developmental milestones. Our daughter loves going into nursery each morning and often talks about the staff members at home. She has just moved up to Little Explorers where I am sure she will have just as good an experience. My son joined the nursery when he turned 2 and he settled in really easily. He adores the staff and talks about them often at home. I have watched him grow in confidence and I regularly notice growth in him at home, from things that he has learnt whilst at nursery. He has more confidence to make friends, sing and dance than when he first joined. I’m always provided with so much information about his progress and I love being given pieces of art that he has worked on. Review of The Bourne End Day Nursery & Pre-School

As recent arrivals to Bourne End from an emigration abroad in Nov 2021, where our 4-year-old daughter attended a highly rated nursery school from where we came, it was important that we find something similar for her. If she could be writing this review it would be summarised as the following “Dad, what are we doing today?” - if the reply is school she springs out of bed in delight - if it’s the weekend we need to count the ‘sleeps’ until she goes back to school. She is mornings only for the moment and always leaves begrudgingly because she wants to stay for the full day. Bourne End Day Nursery is fantastic. Things that struck me when I went for a visit was the ratio of minders/teachers to the children. A genuine level of caring for the children, cuddles, pick me ups after a fall and the freedom to be who they are but still guided in terms of social interaction and how to behave. Daily feedback is provided when I fetch her and their own chef which we need to try and match with meals at home.

We recently moved to the area from London and moved our daughter to Bourne End Day Nursery from another setting. The transition was brilliant and my daughter has felt comfortable, cared for and part of a happy learning community for the past few months. The handover at the end of the day is always informative and shows how much care and attention is paid to all of the children. My daughter's individual interests are taken into account and she is supported in developing these interests further. My son will be joining the nursery soon too and I would highly recommend it to other families in the area.

My daughter (regularly!) says “I love Poppies” - I couldn’t agree more. She came to Poppies mid-pandemic and was made so welcome; we all were. We feel so lucky to have been part of this warm, extended family. Our daughter has made great friends, adores the staff, the food, the garden (especially the slide, sandpit, see-saw, pirate ship and mud garden) and the play activities (she is proud of her new French and sings all the songs merrily). Poppies have encouraged her in every way, helping her to become a really happy, loving, confident small person and preparing her brilliantly for school. I can’t recommend Poppies highly enough.

Review of The Bourne End Day Nursery & Pre-School

We’re really pleased with how our daughter settled in to the nursery very quickly when she started a couple of years ago. She still skips in happily in the morning! The children have a range of activities, structured and free-play and always have time outside which suits my daughter. The diary sheets given at the end of every day tell me everything I need to know which is always useful. The new app is useful too and seems to have additional capabilities which I hope the nursery start to use in the future (the diary sheets are great but we end up with lots of pieces of paper!). The food is nutritious and seasonal and there’s a good variety. The menus have recently been updated so the food is more adventurous than it used to be. The only improvement I would be keen to see is an opportunity to discuss our daughter’s progress in a bit more depth than pick-up allows, though it might be as a result of covid restrictions. Overall would highly recommend, we’re very pleased.

Both our children (11 months and 3 years 2 months) are very happy at Poppies. Our eldest comes home so excited and happy every day. She has made good friends, adores the staff and is happy doing the activities and having busy sociable days. Our baby seems very happy too! The staff and management team are all wonderful. Only thing I think could be a bit better is the menus - bigger range of food, more vegetable, less beans-on-toast style teas. Other than that we are all very happy! Thank you!

Poppies are amazing to have in our lives. I know that my daughter is safe in a stimulating, nurturing and loving environment when she goes there. The staff always give detailed feedback and gom out of their way to answer any queries parents have. Best of all they are all absolutely lovely and a pleasure to deal with. My daughter has been at Poppies Day Nursery since she was 12 months old, starting in 'Baby Nest' and working her way through to 'Nursery Class'. Initially, part-time and now full time; Poppies has been such a significant part of our lives! I can't speak highly enough of the caring staff and the relaxed friendly feel of the place and still during lockdown the nursery remains cool, calm and safe.
