Footsteps Nursery Hawthorn is an OFSTED GOOD (2024) nursery in Lichfield, located on Walsall Road in a refurbished Victorian building linked to a modern extension. The setting offers a warm, characterful environment for children from birth to 5 years, with calm, welcoming rooms that help children feel secure from their very first days. Our team focuses on consistent, attentive care so that families can feel confident their children are safe, understood and supported.
Children experience a broad range of activities shaped by the Early Years Foundation Stage, with learning that may include imaginative play, stories, early numeracy, creative experiences and outdoor investigation. Staff follow childrens interests and next steps, helping them grow in confidence, independence and curiosity through purposeful play.
Outdoor learning is a real strength of the nursery, with a large natural garden and an on-site forest school area. Planned and child-choice experiences may include den building, simple fire lighting, campfire cooking and woodwork, all introduced safely to build resilience and problem-solving skills. A long-serving staff team provides stability and continuity, supporting strong relationships with children and parents over time.

Nutritional Approach

We believe food is fundamental to healthy growth, happy minds, and positive lifelong habits. In the earliest years, what children eat shapes taste preferences, supports brain development, and lays the foundations for long-term health.

All meals are freshly prepared on site each day using quality, seasonal ingredients. Our menus are developed with expert guidance, designed for inclusion, and go beyond Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. We want every child to become a confident, curious eater.

Rebecca Clarke

Hello, I'm Becky. I've been working in early years since 1996. I've been a nursery manager since 2014 and joined Footsteps in 2017.

I am Level 5 qualified in Early Childhood and Level 3 in Forest School.

I am passionate about the outdoors and believe that outdoor environments are essential to a child's learning and development.

Our nursery offers activities, experiences and opportunities for children to thrive, and our dedicated staff team cater for each child's individual needs.

My daughter has had a wonderful time at Footsteps in Lichfield. She will be very sad to leave. She has learnt so much over the years at the nursery and has come on leaps and bounds with her development. My daughter is fairly shy with others, but has very much come out of her shell at nursery with all their support she has been given. Every day we pick her up, she is full of smiles. The staff are fantastic and go out of their way to support the children. I feel that I can approach any staff member with a query and it will be listened too. Thank you also to the management team who excel in clear communication to parents and putting on lots of opportunities for parent engagement. We just want to say a massive thank you to all the staff who have made our daughter's start to education so wonderful!

Footsteps are great at coming up with engaging, fun, learning opportunities for the children, based on themes, such as Christmas, birthdays and other cultural events. Our little boy enjoys nursery and has learnt a lot. His communication has really improved.

Our son started this nursery 6 weeks ago, having left another (non footsteps) nursery that he attended for 2 years. Our son is a completely different child since he started with footsteps Lichfield. He is more confident and most importantly happier. His attention skills have improved and he is happy and engaged in activities when we pick him up at the end of the day (rather than previously stood by the door, on his own, looking upset). We are very glad we made the decision for our son to get a new start, what a difference it's making already to his quality of life, confidence and learning journey.

I couldn't be happier with my baby girl's nursery! I was so anxious about her starting, but she settled in beautifully, and that's all thanks to the amazing staff who truly treat her like one of their own. The team are warm, caring, and so attentive-everything you hope for when trusting someone with your little one. The facilities are always clean and tidy, and the children are kept well entertained with plenty of enrichment opportunities. I love how the nursery incorporates seasonal activities to support the children's learning and development; it's clear so much thought goes into planning each day. The baby room in particular is fantastic. It's a calm, welcoming space, and my daughter is always happy and engaged when she's there. Seeing how much she enjoys attending brings me so much peace of mind. I'm genuinely thrilled that she attends this nursery-it's been such a positive experience for both of us. Highly recommend!

Our daughter loved all of her 4 years at Footsteps Lichfield, and so did we. She settled so well in each room and thrived in the kindness, nurture and care that the staff provide. She has particularly grown in confidence in pre-school and is really excited to start school. I've always been confident the staff have had my daughter's best interests at heart and helped her grow and develop into the girl she is now. We feel so lucky that she has had this wonderful start in life, and want to say a huge thank you to all of the staff for the part they have played in it.

My eldest daughter has attended the nursery since September 2024 starting in the baby room, she used to cry a lot in the beginning but then she formed a lovely bond with her key worker and then my daughter was so excited to go to nursery. The activities they do, the toys available and just the staff are incredible. I love the outdoor space available and the room layouts. Nothing is ever too silly to ask admin wise, I was struggling to understand some funding (baby brain was taking full effect) and the staff couldn't be more helpful and didn't make me feel silly for asking at all. There's such a personal touch within the nursery, all the staff members know the children and parents. I wouldn't trust anyone else with my children. My youngest daughter also starts in August and I would highly recommend this nursery to anyone and everyone!

My daughter has flourished at this nursery. They are breastfeeding friendly, have a wonderful menu, interesting clubs, a varied curriculum, a fantastic array of toys for all interests, support additional ways of communication such as Makaton, great outdoor spaces with forest school, friendly and approachable staff, great feedback at the end of each day, flexible and supportive management. They encourage child led play and allow the children to choose their key workers by seeing who they connect with more. They take an interest in the family and have been so supportive at last minute changes or difficulties.

From the moment we walk in, it's a place where my daughter is truly known, cared for, and nurtured like one of their own. The staff are incredible. They know my daughter so well - her personality, her preferences, and even the little things that make her smile. It's obvious how much they care, and that genuine attention and love shines through in everything they do. I never feel like she's just another child in the room; she is valued and celebrated for who she is. There is always something fun and creative going on. I'm constantly amazed at how much thought and variety goes into their planning, and my daughter comes home happy, tired, and full of stories about her day. What has meant the most to us is the support we've received through big milestones. From potty training to encouraging her speech and language development, the team has been there every step of the way - offering consistency, encouragement, and expert guidance that's made a real difference in her progress.

Review of Footsteps Nursery Hawthorn (Lichfield)

This review is for all of the months since Sept 24 that my children have attended Footsteps. I can only sing the praises of the staff in every classroom, the management team, the key workers of my children - everyone is so lovely, helpful and friendly. My children absolutely love coming to nursery, we never have tears at drop off time - they have so much fun doing all of the activities, making friends and playing outside. As a single working parent it gives me so much peace to know my children are truly cared for and happy, during the hours I am away from them. I don't have to worry about them at all as I trust they are in brilliant hands and having a wonderful time. They have bonded to the staff at the nursery, even staff who aren't in their classrooms, which is wonderful. They even love the food (mostly!) which is astonishing seeing as I get a fair amount of toddler fussiness at home!! I am so very grateful to the whole of the Footsteps team, and can't thank them enough.

Very caring staff who enjoy their jobs which makes it a lovely environment for my babies. A lot of the staff are still there from when my daughter went to nursery 3 years ago which says a lot. Babies always doing interactive fun stuff, varied diet and they go outside lots. When my babies are sad when I drop off they cuddle them which is really important to me too. Lovely place.

Review of Footsteps Nursery Hawthorn (Lichfield)

My son started at Footsteps Lichfield in January in the baby room. I found the first few weeks leaving him very difficult but all of the practitioners were always so lovely and made me feel reassured. He is quite settled now and seems to have built lovely connections with the ladies in his room and especially his key worker. Drop off and pick ups never feel rushed and the practitioners are always keen to hear how my son is that morning and also to update me on what he's been up to that day. They do lots of activities such as going outside, messy play, arts and crafts and jo jingles which my son really enjoys. We are always kept updated by the nursery too via the app with meals, nappies and sleep times too. Overall I am really happy with the nursery.

Nursery staff are fantastic. Opening hours are excellent. Friendships are encouraged and fostered well. My child always comes home happy. The only negative is that the pricing and billing structure is unclear. Bills are not itemised and we have in the past been billed incorrectly which has been difficult to identify.

We are over the moon with the care our son receives at Footsteps Lichfield. All of the staff in the baby room are warm, friendly and nurturing. Due to this the settling in process was much easier for both baby and parents. The room is cosy, the food is healthy and the overall feel of the nursery is homely. The communication is really good with the new app and all staff encourage popping in and calling at any time with questions or worries. Our baby loves being outdoors and this is another key reason we chose to send him here, each area of the nursery has its own outdoor space which they use regularly.

Both of my children have attended Footsteps Hawthorn and loved/love it. The team are awesome! There's ample outside space and children are allowed to just be children which is really important. The activities are always enjoyed and well thought through. I've found the nursery has really supported my children's learning and development, it's taught them to interact with others outside of the home/family environment and laid a really strong foundation for primary school. I know my children are safe and cared for and that their needs are prioritised and that peace of mind is everything.

This is the best nursery for our little boy he loves going here 3 days a week and I honestly cannot say one bad thing about the nursery or staff. All of the staff are so caring, loving and considerate to our babies' needs. Their structured development plans have assisted us in reaching his major milestones. He has come on leaps and bounds since starting here and it's great to see. Many evenings I go to pick him up and he's too busy having fun even to notice I am there! He also eats better than us every day with a great varied menu! We would definitely recommend Footsteps Lichfield for your little one. We went to view when I was pregnant and reserved a space which I would recommend as the spaces fill up fast.

The girls are brilliant, caring and compassionate. We get updates throughout the day on what he's eaten and photos every now and again which is lovely to see. The staff are incredibly friendly and clearly love working with the children. My daughter has been attending the nursery since she was 10 months old. She is now 2.5 years and she has absolutely thrived. The staff are so personable, they are my daughter's best friends she's always talking about them! She has a number of allergies and I've always felt confident they will manage these as best they could, any concerns have always been taken very seriously and they still provide her with varied and nutritious meals despite her restrictive diet. Feel very comfortable with them caring for her.

We have two sons at Footsteps Hawthorn, one in the baby room and one in preschool. Our oldest has been here since baby room and during the last 3+ years, I can only say the nursery has been exemplary and outstanding. The activities are varied and culturally enriching, the food is nutritious, the site is surrounded by nature, and all the staff we have dealt with are considerate, polite, caring and mostly very immersed in each child's development. Our oldest son is a little shy and the staff make extra effort to involve him, whilst our youngest is a bit more outgoing and he has developed incredibly thanks to the care of the team members. The price is reasonable considering the local market also and we think it's value for money. COVID and other illnesses are handled and communicated well as are any required medicines. Our youngest needed an inhaler for a while and the staff eased our minds with their professionalism. All in all, nothing but great things to say and we are very thankful to them.

My daughter has attended footsteps for just over a year and my son had attended previously. I couldn't recommend this nursery enough! They go above and beyond ensuring they have lots of fun and learn along the way. My daughter gets so excited to come and has formed a lovely bond with her keyworker. Staff are always very friendly from the moment we enter in the morning. Even when my child has a bad morning, and isn't keen on leaving us, the staff are always on hand to help - taking him from us calmly and helping him to settle. Very reassuring and always happy for us to call and check. Lovely warm and friendly atmosphere in all rooms. Management is approachable when I have queries or questions. Outdoor space is the best thing about this nursery (aside from the staff) - fantastic that the children have so much space and different areas to explore.

My daughter has been at Footsteps Nursery Hawthorns for 4 years now (since she was 10 months old). The staff at Footsteps were amazing at ensuring she settled in as a baby to her now being ready for school. She has loved going to Footsteps and has made some great connections with the staff and children, and most importantly had a safe and happy environment to play and learn. We recommend Footsteps Nursery Hawthorns to all our friends. The outdoor facilities are great with such an array of things for the children to do and learn. Our daughter loves the meadow, pirate ship and Forest School. The staff plan out great activities for learning and encourage children to use their imaginations during ‘free play’. Review of Footsteps Nursery Hawthorn (Lichfield)

My son has just left Footsteps Nursery & Forest School for school, having been there since he was a year old. We've been so happy with every room over the years; the indoor and outdoor settings are large, well equipped and beautifully maintained (forest school, in particular, is wonderful), the air conditioning has been a blessing every summer, and he eats well (apparently the chef makes the best salsa in the world!). The staff are supportive and friendly and have all made the effort to know my son well and to meet his needs. He's emerged from nursery a very happy and confident boy who is more than ready for school. The manager and the team had an excellent response to covid restrictions; safety and wellbeing were paramount at Footsteps.
