About Footsteps Nursery Canwell
At Footsteps Nursery Canwell is an OFSTED Good nursery in Canwell, offering a calm, welcoming environment where children feel settled, confident and connected to the world around them. Set in a rural village, our forest school approach gives children daily opportunities to learn through nature, exploration and hands-on play.
Guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage, we provide purposeful, play-based experiences that support each child’s development. Children learn in age-appropriate groups, with routines shaped around individual needs so they feel secure and understood.
Outdoor learning is central to nursery life. Each age group has its own outdoor area, plus access to a large woodland space where children explore natural materials, build movement skills and follow their imagination. Across the seasons, activities may include mud play, den-building and carefully supervised time around a fire pit.
Our dedicated forest school classroom offers a sheltered base, so outdoor learning can continue whatever the weather, balancing comfort with adventure. We work closely with families through open communication and consistent care, helping parents feel reassured and involved.

Nutritional Approach
We believe food is fundamental to healthy growth, happy minds, and positive lifelong habits. In the earliest years, what children eat shapes taste preferences, supports brain development, and lays the foundations for long-term health.
All meals are freshly prepared on site each day using quality, seasonal ingredients. Our menus are developed with expert guidance, designed for inclusion, and go beyond Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. We want every child to become a confident, curious eater.

Katie Mason
Hello, I'm Katie. I'm the manager here at Footsteps Nursery Canwell. I've been managing nurseries since 2012 and joined Footsteps in October 2020.
I am qualified in Childcare and Education and passionate about children's emotional wellbeing and supporting them to become independent investigators. Our nursery builds an environment of exciting experiences for children to explore.
Our fantastic team ensure that all the children feel content with the love and affection they receive from their key carers and build unique bonds that help them feel safe, secure and ready to learn.

Our Curriculum
Our nursery curriculum is inclusive and ambitious, designed to support children's progress at each stage of their journey through confidence, resilience and independence. We focus on the primary areas of physical development, communication and social interaction, which are fundamental to child development.
Each area is called confident communicators, resilient resolvers and independent investigators. At the end of a child's stay in each room, we reflect on the impact of our curriculum in a transition overview, which we share in partnership with parents.
