About Kids Play - The Childcare Hub

Kids Play – The Childcare Hub is a nature-based nursery in Knowlhill, Milton Keynes, on Roebuck Way. This purpose-built setting is the home of Kids Play’s outdoor-focused approach, offering care from 3 months up to 11 years through day nursery and holiday club places. A committed team uses child-led “planning in the moment” so play can quickly become meaningful learning.
Every room has its own free-flow garden, plus access to communal woodland gardens and a rooftop growing space. Babies develop motor skills with natural wooden toys; toddlers enjoy water and creative play; and preschoolers may dive into forest school activities or storytelling in the Hobbit house.
Children also help care for resident animals such as guinea pigs, rabbits and African snails, encouraging responsibility and empathy. On the roof garden, they can plant vegetables and herbs and may use them to create pizzas in the outdoor oven, linking food, nature and hands-on learning.
Extra-curricular opportunities may include forest school sessions, dance club, yoga and science activities, adding further richness to daily life. The team aims to nurture “little green thinkers” who love the outdoors and feel confident exploring it.

Nutritional Approach

We believe food is fundamental to healthy growth, happy minds, and positive lifelong habits. In the earliest years, what children eat shapes taste preferences, supports brain development, and lays the foundations for long-term health.

All meals are freshly prepared on site each day using quality, seasonal ingredients. Our menus are developed with expert guidance, designed for inclusion, and go beyond Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. We want every child to become a confident, curious eater.

Kathryn East

Hi, I'm Kathryn, the manager at The Childcare Hub. I've been working in childcare since 2007 and hold my Level 3 qualification. I started my journey with Kids Play at one of the sister nurseries, Wolverton Day Nursery. After progressing from deputy to manager within a few months, I transferred to The Childcare Hub in 2020 and have been here since joining in September 2018.

I'm very passionate about the curiosity approach and am a real advocate for outdoor play and learning. I believe the child's interests should be at the heart of teaching and learning experiences, which aligns with planning in the moment.

What I like most is empowering other staff members to build on their skills. I'm passionate about building children's foundations for the best start in life.

The room leaders specially Molly are such a great example of a caring environment. This is by far the best nursery I have experienced in the area! My youngest came here after a bad experience at a different nursery which left her shy, quiet and isolated. Shes been at the childcare hub since October and has come on leaps and bound! Shes excited to go to nursery every morning with no tears or tantrums, she has started to speak more and more and even starting trying to use the potty (she's just turned 2!). From a parent perspective they are a safe, secure nursery with excellent communication and super helpful staff. Thank you!

My son has settled into nursery so well! He's been in 2 rooms so far and both have been fantastic, as was the settling process from one room to another. Leaving your small baby with effectively strangers is a big deal, and the process was made as easy as could be for both me and my son. Staff are supportive and understanding when raising any issues or when you need support with things that you are working on at home. Staff seem to know lots of the children as well, not just those in their room, which is lovely! My son has developed and learned so much since being here too.

The facilities are great, the staff are fantastic, overall cannot fault the nursery and the care the staff provide for the children. Kids Play has been absolutely fantastic. My baby started in August at 12 months old and they have been so supportive and accommodating. The staff in the baby room are caring and nurturing and I have no worries about sending my baby there every day. They update the app every day so I know how his day is going and I have every confidence that they would tell me immediately if it was otherwise. The team are so open and friendly and I feel so well supported by them. The settling process was great and they were so flexible about it to meet the needs of my baby and he was always their priority in the process. I couldn't rate the nursery highly enough so far!!

I am beyond grateful for the staff at the hub. They have helped me identify area of development we need to work on, supported with referrals and setting up IEP's alongside other trackers to ensure we get us much as possible to help with my child's referrals. They have supported me in the process and been incredibly kind as I have found not just the separation difficult but also coming to terms with SEN bits that came to light. I have first known Kids Play with my son when he started attending at 1 year old and now mu daughter is attending pre school, and also my son attends activity day camp too when needed during school holidays. I have only had wonderful experiences with all the different teachers we encountered in the various rooms. They're all passionate about their job, they absolutely love the children and my kids have always been very happy with all of them. I cannot recommend Kids Play strong enough!

My son started attending preschool, during Covid, having had a really poor experience at our local nursery/preschool. From day 1 the experience was completely different! The staff were fantastic and my son had a wonderful time- he loved playing outdoors, joining in with activities and making friends. He attended the preschool until he went to school, at which point, my daughter started attending the nursery. She was so well looked after, by some of the kindest, caring staff I've met. She then moved up to preschool where she is now- she has so much fun on her preschool days! Again, our experience has been brilliant- she loves all of the staff, especially learning about all their different cultural backgrounds during celebrations throughout the year. The management team are great- so helpful and flexible and understanding when we have questions or requests. Having attended this nursery/preschool for 5 years, we are going to really miss them when my youngest starts school!

Not a good nursery if your child has any additional needs. My son has a speech delay and as such was not as advanced as other children when it came to sitting and eating lunch. On almost every day he would be sent home with us being told he had eaten a solitary cracker. We had advised the nursery that he eats with a high chair at home so as to focus him on the meal, however, they refused to use a high chair and were happy for him to go a while, 8-hour day wasting only a cracker. By comparison, he has now started a primary school nursery and is given access to a high chair and eats the majority of his lunch every day. For how much money you pay for a nursery like this you would hope they would at least feed your children. He was left to his own devices most of the time and we were left with the impression they did not have the time or resources to support him.

Our child didn't get any service from the company, so was a non starter, but they will still happily take your deposit! Apparently it's in the contract, no love, you like to rob people of their hard earned money and stick 2 fingers in the air, says everything about the place, thank God we didn't leave our child there!

We currently have two of our children attending the nursery and they have been there since January 2023. The staff are absolutely fantastic and go out of their way to ensure the children are happy and content. They focus on getting to know the children as individuals and build excellent rapport with them. Both of my girls have been fortunate to have the most amazing keyworkers from the baby room to preschool. As parents, we were sceptical about putting our girls into nursery in the first place, however, I cannot recommend this place enough. You have to visit it to understand how child-centred and beautiful the setting is. We absolutely love that the children get to explore nature and learn by having autonomy over the types of activities they engage in. Highly recommended!

Our son started at Kids Play last year after we had a bad experience at another nursery where our son was not welcome to attend all year as he has additional needs. I can't recommend this nursery enough, they have been amazing! The facilities in the nursery are outstanding and the staff are amazing, our son has come along so well at this nursery and they have been so good with keeping us informed about everything from his day at nursery and keeping us informed about everything that they are doing for him with regards to SEN, which he will now be ready to move to school with an EHCP in place which they explained everything about it to us and did everything for and appreciate all the work that this has taken. This nursery is so inclusive and our son is thriving there. Thank you so much the manager, the SENCO and all the staff at Kids Play.

I have two children attending The Childcare Hub in babies and preschool. We have been attending the nursery since January 2021 and could not be happier with the childcare setting. All staff in all the rooms have made me feel at ease leaving my children. They provide a thorough debrief daily and additional reviews on my children's development. The children love the outdoors and nature play that is available to them daily. Since attending the setting, both have become a lot more confident and we know they enjoy their time at the nursery. I highly recommend it.

I send both my children to this nursery. My son started in the baby room in the summer and settled in quickly. We have seen his confidence grow and the staff in that room have been brilliant, working with us and him, to help him learn new things. He has formed strong relationships with his key worker and some of the other staff and children. My daughter is in the preschool room. It is a large setting so they always have a wide range of activities going on for the children to choose from. She particularly enjoys the creative activities, as well as the fantastic garden and outdoor facilities. They also do regular trips to the local farm and attend forest school sessions. She learns a lot there and I feel will be well prepared for starting school next year.

Lovely staff and is a great place for the children. Lots of activities for them to enjoy all day. I can see a very rapid development in the education of the children. The outdoor spaces are really well equipped for the children. The only downside is when the kids are coming home very dirty and muddy, full of sand, but I suppose at least they had a really fun day.

The staff in the baby room have been brilliant at helping settle my little one and me into nursery, especially in the restricted times. Her key worker has gone above and beyond to ensure I feel updated, have had the opportunity to look around the room again after hours as the last time we visited was in 2019 and suggested things to help with my baby adjusting. I was anxious about her sleeping and eating there and they've totally followed her lead, pace and made her feel comfortable to sleep. Any new start is challenging but particularly in these stricter times. I'm really grateful for their support and the facilities look great. She came home covered in glitter the other day and had had a great time. Thank you to the team!

Our daughter has been attending The Childcare Hub nursery since January 2021. Due to our gentle parenting style we had originally been focused on finding a childminder. We were recommended the nursery and could not be happier with what we found. They have been able to meet all our requirements and daughters needs. They clearly have an up to date, evidence-based approach to childcare. With the challenges of the pandemic it was a nerve wracking transition for our daughter but they were incredibly supportive. They have accepted cloth nappies without any difficulty and they are happy to provide a gentle approach to sleep. We also follow a Montessori influence at home and their natural approach to child led learning fits very well alongside this. Currently she is transitioning from the baby to toddler room and this has been handled with great care and reassurance. I highly recommend considering this nursery.

My son has been at this pre-school since September 2020. He is extremely happy there and has learnt so much in a relatively short space of time. This has obviously been a difficult year for everyone but I am so impressed with how the pre-school have kept life as normal as possible and continued to keep the children engaged with fun, enriching, and exciting activities. I cannot fault the staff and the care they give. They are always happy to see the children and welcome them in with smiles and enthusiasm. They work so hard behind the scenes to keep their venue open and safe for our children. My son looks forward to going every day and I know he will be sad to leave them in July. A special mention to a particular member of staff, my son absolutely adores him and he comes home with endless stories of the games and activities that they have had fun doing. Without a doubt, this childcare setting was a treasure found in our case! We love everything about the setting! This nursery has excellent outdoor space with lots of activities for kids. There are fantastic playgrounds, which would suit explorers of any age. The internal areas are built for maximum comfort of little people with lots of toys and activities available. We were impressed with the level of support and assistance offered to our son when he joined the setting. This nursery is by far the best one we went to! As parents, we can see how much our little boy progressed since we joined. I can confidently say that we can see how much teachers work with our child, and this time investment is priceless. Our son’s confidence grows every day; he improved his math and phonic skills exponentially. From the moment I met the setting manager, I was blown away by how passionate everyone is about the well-being of kids and their development. Fantastic place, amazing staff and very happy kids!

I have sent all three of my children to Kids Play in Bury St Edmunds. My youngest is now 15 months and has been there since he was 7 months. The staff are always so friendly and take the time to discuss every individual child with the parents. I really enjoy my chats with them in the morning and afternoon. My children were all extremely happy there and I have always found that my children's individual needs have been catered for excellently. The support in my children's social and learning development has been brilliant. I would definitely recommend this nursery.

Even in the baby room, there is genuine free flow access to their own separate outdoor space which is amazing. All staff are friendly and have great relationships with the children. The catering team do an excellent job of dealing with my son's allergies and my son eats a brilliant variety of healthy nutritious food. Security is good with fingerprint access. A wide range of activities are offered and they encourage the children to pursue things they are interested in. For instance, the baby room have just ordered some new toddler bikes in response to the more active children being interested in them having seen the older children on them. Reporting back to the parents isn't as good as other nurseries but my son is well looked after and happy here which is the most important thing.

Where have you been all our lives! This is an amazing nursery, our daughter has settled in very quickly, she is coming on leaps and bounds since she started and has made lots of new friends.
