About Old Schoolhouse Kindergarten

Old Schoolhouse Kindergarten is an OFSTED GOOD (2025) nursery in Stanway, on London Road. Our kindergarten offers a warm welcome for children aged 6 months to 5 years in a charming converted schoolhouse, prioritising safeguarding and structured experiences so every child feels secure, respected and eager to learn. We foster positive partnerships with parents through trust, mutual support and regular progress shares.
Children explore well‑resourced playrooms that meet individual needs, blending personal development with shared activities per the Early Years Foundation Stage. Our vigilant team ensures a harm‑free space, reviewing practices to enhance outcomes.
Our enclosed garden delights with a mud kitchen, reading area, bridges and balance equipment for all weathers. Babies enjoy a unique roof garden with sensory spots and a story teepee, while older children build obstacle courses. Opportunities may include outdoor yoga and cooking with on‑site nutritious meals.

Nutritional Approach

We believe food is fundamental to healthy growth, happy minds, and positive lifelong habits. In the earliest years, what children eat shapes taste preferences, supports brain development, and lays the foundations for long-term health.

All meals are freshly prepared on site each day using quality, seasonal ingredients. Our menus are developed with expert guidance, designed for inclusion, and go beyond Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. We want every child to become a confident, curious eater.

Meet Our Nursery Manager

Libby Leever

Hello, I'm Libby, the nursery manager at The Old Schoolhouse Kindergarten. I joined in 2007 and hold a Level 5 Diploma in Childcare, Leadership and Management.

I have over two decades of experience working in both large and small independent childcare settings. During this time, I have enjoyed working with many families and team members to provide a nurturing and supportive environment for the children in our care to thrive.

Our Curriculum

Our nursery curriculum is tailored specifically to our setting, focusing on the skills and knowledge we wish children to acquire before they transition to school. While the curriculum is consistent across the nursery, it is adapted differently in each playroom to cater to the various ages and developmental stages of the children.

We aim for our children to take pride in their achievements, show respect for themselves and others, exhibit independence, become confident communicators and understand and manage their emotions. We also have our superhero bear, Price, who enjoys visiting the children so they can showcase their superpowers.

Review of Old Schoolhouse Kindergarten

Our daughter loved her time at The Old School House Kindergarten. They have supported her through every step of her journey. The relationships that the staff build with the children build trust and set them up perfectly for school. Through Covid they were understanding and practical, realising the pressures that parents were under and helping us as needed. We've even borrowed some of the recipes for cooking at home! I recommend it to anyone.

Review of Old Schoolhouse Kindergarten

I have nothing bad to say about The Old School House. The staff are incredible and obviously love their jobs and truly care about the children. They are so kind and caring towards the children and communication is brilliant. My two children have come on leaps and bounds since starting in 2020, they are confident, happy, and smart girls and a lot of that is thanks to The Old School House. I cannot thank you all enough for the time you have all put into our daughters’ development. I will miss seeing the staff every day and I know my children will too. The outside space at the nursery is lovely with lots of different things to explore. This was always a favourite for my children. The activities the children part take in are also brilliant and really encourage a lot of different skills.

Review of Old Schoolhouse Kindergarten

I would recommend this setting to anyone. My eldest went here 7 years ago and absolutely loved it and my youngest is just about to leave and is upset about this. The staff are amazing and the children learn a lot from them all. I know my children learn so much from being there, so thank you, you will all be missed.

Review of Old Schoolhouse Kindergarten

My children have been going to The Old School House, Colchester for 7 years and I am quite sad that that time has almost come to an end. We have always felt that the management and her team have had the best interests of our two children. Our kids have loved going here, have made lovely friends and have been wonderfully set up to go to school. I couldn't have asked for a better place to send my kids.

Review of Old Schoolhouse Kindergarten

We are so happy with The Old School House Kindergarten. The staff are incredible and the progression that we are seeing with our son from his time at nursery is just amazing. The facilities are great, we get regular updates and our son gets involved with a wide variety of activities throughout the day. Our son loves to come to nursery and we know that we are leaving him in a safe and happy environment. We really couldn’t recommend The Old School House anymore.

Review of Old Schoolhouse Kindergarten

Both my daughters have/are attending the setting. As a parent, I find all the staff to be so helpful, kind and supportive. Both my girls have been extremely happy and I really feel that they are given such care and attention. My eldest left last year and was so well prepared for school when she left. My youngest is coming on leaps and bounds with her talking, counting and physical skills. It is lovely, as a parent, to know that your children are going to be so well taken care of when you leave them for the day.
