About Handkerchief Day Nursery

Handkerchief Day Nursery is an OFSTED GOOD (2025) nursery in Kegworth, based in a converted barn on the High Street. The nursery offers a cosy, home-from-home environment for children aged 0 months to 5 years, with a calm, nurturing atmosphere where children can feel safe, valued and ready to explore. A skilled, experienced team shares a clear focus on high-quality care and strong relationships with families.
Children enjoy carefully planned environments and activities that may include sensory play, early communication, creative experiences and opportunities to build independence. Each room has its own outdoor space, supporting regular time outside and free-flow play for younger children.
The nursery benefits from a spacious forest school area with trees, a pond and wide open space, alongside an additional large garden and growing zone. Experiences here may include healthy risk-taking, gardening or caring for the nursery's guinea pigs. Extra-curricular opportunities may include Dancing Digits, Jo Jingles and in-house clubs such as history, French, art, music and cooking.

Nutritional Approach

We believe food is fundamental to healthy growth, happy minds, and positive lifelong habits. In the earliest years, what children eat shapes taste preferences, supports brain development, and lays the foundations for long-term health.

All meals are freshly prepared on site each day using quality, seasonal ingredients. Our menus are developed with expert guidance, designed for inclusion, and go beyond Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. We want every child to become a confident, curious eater.

Julie Stamps

I have built a diverse and extensive career in early years of education, including 16 years leading a preschool within a school setting. My experience also encompasses managing private day nurseries, leading individual rooms, and working as a nanny, giving me a well-rounded understanding of childcare across different environments.

I hold a BA (Hons) in Education, alongside the NNEB qualification. I am committed to fostering a supportive and nurturing environment for everyone I work with, including children, practitioners, parents, and families. Guided by my Christian values, I take a compassionate and collaborative approach to my work. I adopt a holistic perspective on childcare and firmly believe that all children can thrive and achieve when provided with the right environment and support.

I joined Handkerchief September 2025 and I love it here because there is so much support. Basically, I just love to make a difference to the lives of the people I encounter.

Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is child-based, as we know how much children learn through play. Children's interests are an important part of our planning, and we use practitioners' knowledge alongside parental contribution and each child's ability to shape learning experiences.

We focus on the holistic child and aim to meet children's needs by understanding who they are and what motivates them. All our children are included, as we are an inclusive provision, and we are very much an outdoor nursery.

Review of Handkerchief Day Nursery

Both of my little ones go to this nursery and we think it's a fab place for them to be :)! The staff are friendly and helpful and genuinely care about the children and building strong relationships with them! My little boy has been in each room now and has come away every day with a big smile on his face, my little girl is currently in babies and really enjoys it :) A great nursery with great staff that id recommend to anyone!

Our son moved to handkerchief nursery at the start of the new year, following the closure of the nursery he was previously at. with such a change we were worried about him resettling etc, but all the staff were absolutely amazing and so reassuring during the settling in process, it really helped putting our mind at ease. Our son seems to have settled so well and happily goes over to staff at drop off. We get frequent pictures on the family app of what he has been up to during the day and things he's enjoyed! What he's eaten and how much he's ate! The nursery itself is lovely both inside and outside, and I really enjoy how much they get the children outside playing, at several pick ups they have been playing out in the gardens having fun! Thank you to all staff who have been so reassuring, helpful, and supportive with everything

My son has been attending since August 2025 and he absolutely loves it here, he gets excited to go, which says everything. The staff are all so lovely, caring, and supportive, and they've created such a warm and welcoming environment.He has developed so much and learned an incredible amount. We've seen a huge boost in his confidence, communication, and overall development. One thing we especially love is how much time the children spend outdoors, exploring and playing outside, which he really enjoys. It's so reassuring as a parent to know your child is happy, safe, and genuinely thriving. We're so grateful to all the staff for the care and effort they put into every day. Highly recommend!

Review of Handkerchief Day Nursery

My daughter has been at Handkerchief since March 2024, and she absolutely loves it. The staff are wonderful they always know exactly how to cheer her up, even on those more difficult, rushed mornings. I've also experienced their incredible support personally during a challenging time, and it reassured me that I wouldn't want my daughter anywhere else. She comes home singing the songs they teach and proudly shows me the paintings and drawings she's created. The updates on the app are fantastic and so reassuring while I'm at work-it's lovely to see photos of her happy and playing, or to know she's slept well and enjoyed her meals. I would wholeheartedly recommend this nursery-and my daughter would too!

My son has been at Handkerchief since September 2025 amd he's loving every minute of every day that he attends. The staff always keep me up to date on his well being and he's always happy to run to them at drop off, even after a week off sick, he runs in to warm welcome arms and tell the staff he missed them. I have two children at Handkerchief, both in different rooms and I am so very pleased and happy with their care. They both have food allergies which are catered to incredibly well and treated formally and professionally. I feel they are treated with true care and compassion. As well as a brilliant amount of time outside - my 2 year old taught me how to saw wood this weekend and was very insistent on telling me how not to touch the blades of his plastic saw. The staff are 'the village' we all hear about and I am safe in the knowledge I trust their judgement. Their communication and updates via the app are also very efficient, in real time and thorough which I really appreciate. Would highly recommend

I absolutly love this Nursery. My little boy Arthur has been here since September 2025 and he loves it. From the moment I came to look around, to sorting the preperation out before the start date and up until now every member of staff has been fabulous. They are caring and friendly and go above and beyond to support you on your childs journey but also you on your new parent journey. Ive felt so welcomed by the team, the babies team are amazing and i genuinly believe my little boy is confident, outgoing and smiley because of them. He has now moved up to tweenies and again the transtion was easy. Hes learning lots and is on track with his development, again thanks to the variety of activities they do. The outdoor space here is brilliant, im so glad I chose this nursery and would recommend to anyone

Review of Handkerchief Day Nursery

Our daughter adores attending this nursery. The staff are so warm and welcoming to her and she's made real bonds with both staff and other children. She's moved up from the baby room, to the Tweenies room and is currently in Toddlers 1. All rooms have been great with her. They have lovely facilities, amazing outdoor spaces and lots of creative play. She also loves the Jo Jingles class that comes every other Tuesday. Would recommend!

My child really enjoys going to Handkerchief nursery. They love the outdoor playing spaces and forest school activities in particular. The staff are all friendly and there are some really lovely, caring people working there. The food menu is varied, healthy and interesting. The children learn about a range of topics and get to do lots of drawing. We can really see progression in being able to draw shapes and hold a pen correctly. Most days she loves it so much she doesn't want to come home.

My son has spent time in each room from Babies, Tweenies and now Toddlers and our experience has been so positive. The staff show genuine care and interest in his welfare and interests. When he's struggled settling in they have even borrowed a toy from another room because they know that he likes it. It's so reassuring as a parent to know that your child is thriving and settled away from home. Nursery is amazing for little ones and I'd have no hesitation in recommending Handkerchief.

Our daughter joined Handkerchief in September 2025, she is currently in the Baby room and settled so quickly. The staff in the whole nursery are so welcoming and caring. The developments our daughter has achieved already is amazing and it's thanks to the wonderful team caring for her. Knowing our daughter will be spending the first 4 years of her life here getting the best possible start in her education makes us very happy. Review of Handkerchief Day Nursery

Handkerchief Nursery have been truly amazing since our son started in May. We were incredibly impressed with the process of settling our son in, offering as many settling in sessions needed for him to feel comfortable. Due to a medical condition and ongoing tests, we have a personal treatment plan which the team have remained diligent with the whole way through. There is absolutely no doubt that everyone genuinely cares. The nursery is our sons favourite place, he loves socialising with the other children as well as adults, painting, outside play, food, and is also given the time and space to play independently. The team are always warm and welcoming and are so informative with updates throughout the day, both on the app and in person on pick up. Parents evening offered is in depth, with personal feedback and time to discuss any questions or concerns. The team have always respected our schedule around feeding and naps etc, and have always been reactive and supportive with any change.

The staff take wonderful care of her, offering fun, engaging activities, lots of support & encouragement for developmental growth, and tasty, nutritional meals. Can't fault Handkerchief Day Nursery! My daughter was there from babies right through to pre school she is now turning 11 and it was the best then so there was no doubt in my mind when I had my son 8.5 years on that he would go there too. I think it says something when some of the staff are still there all these years on! They are all so friendly and loving, they go out there way to give me a full handover when I pick up. My son absolutely loves it! He has developed so early with his speech and funny character!! His favourite day being Tuesday when and entertainer goes and now he is starting Forest School which is just the best for his learning and development and getting all that fresh air! Every time he moves up a room I feel nervous but they do the transitions so well and my son has never been upset or worried, just excited and the bond he builds with the team in each room is so wonderful to see!! All in all a positive experience that has lasted years!! Thank you everyone xx

Review of Handkerchief Day Nursery

Handkerchief is a lovely nursery. Both my daughters attend here. They both have special dietary and heath conditions. Handkerchief have always kept up to date with their health conditions, informing all staff who keep my daughters safe. They are able to cater and carefully plan around my children to ensure they’re involved in all activities. My eldest loves forest school. She enjoys looking after the animals, climbing the trees and exploring the workshop area. My youngest daughter started in the Spring and settled well with the staff members. Despite her separation anxiety, the staff are able to help keep her calm at drop off times. The staff are all well trained and treat each child with the love, care and attention they all need. They give me great confidence knowing my children are safe and happy.

From the minute we visited Handkerchief we knew this was the nursery for our boy. Overall appearance, features, rooms, areas, facilities and especially the staff really stood out and still do on a daily basis. We love the ethos of Handkerchief and the efforts everybody goes to maintain it, great variety of fresh fruit and cooked food on a daily basis, utilising natural, rustic and effective equipment to stimulate all of the children and modern technology to record, report and keep the parents updated regularly. The staff at Handkerchiefs are amazing and so lovely with the children. My little girl started at seven months in the baby room and is now in the Tweenie room so have met staff in both rooms. My girl settled very quickly in both rooms and it’s reassuring I can leave her and she will have a lovely day. It’s great that everything is included and the meals are nice and healthy too.

You will not find another nursery where the word excellent can be applied to every aspect of it. From the office team, through to the nursery facilities and all the nursery staff right down to its very ethos Handkerchief shines out above all others. We looked at 9 separate nurseries before we decided on Handkerchief Nursery and I cannot convey succinctly enough just how pleased and impressed we have been. They make you feel like you are part of one big family, where nothing is too much trouble and your parenting is their parenting, and this can be seen in just how happy our little boy is with them. The facilities and approach the nursery has is without doubt leading the way in modern childcare, providing brilliant enrichment, enhancing our little one's development and encouraging him to explore, interact and grow. The Nursery Manager, Office Manager and ALL the team in the baby room are to be commended on a truly brilliant job. This nursery should be your only choice.

My daughter has been attending this nursery now for 4 months, at the start she would not settle when dropping her off but now loves attending and waves us off. This is down to the baby team being patient and helping her settle in. They are all very helpful and clearly caring of the children they have in their care. We receive detailed events of her day which always seem jam packed with fun and learning activities along with random emails with pictures during the day of what she is up to. Our daughter loves attending and, knowing this, we enjoy sending her there.

Outstanding nursery - I cannot fault it. Our son was 6 months old when he joined this nursery and he is currently 8 months old. In those 2 months, he has developed and grown so much! The staff in baby room are amazing, nothing is ever too much trouble. They spend time at both drop off and pick up to ask what has been happening with our son during the days he isn't there and what he's been up to during the hours he's with them. I love the app they use to give updates on progress - especially the adorable photos. We travel for up to an hour each way to drop and pick up our son from this nursery and we definitely wouldn't do that if it wasn't so great. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this nursery to anyone who asks.

Review of Handkerchief Day Nursery

The disruption of the extension/building work did cause some initial issues. However, now this is complete, I feel it is an excellent area for the children to be. I really like the varied activities the team seem to do with the children, from pumpkin carving to tasting of lemons etc and feel this will only get better as my child becomes older. I would love more photos to be sent, but understand this is not always possible and do appreciate the ones which are sent. The flexibility of the care staff (ie feeding early when an early pick up is required), is great and the team are very supportive and welcoming.

Review of Handkerchief Day Nursery

The nursery provides lovely facilities in a friendly and welcoming environment. The children have a range of activities every day and I really like the fact they get them outside as much as possible. The nursery has an excellent forest school and my daughter often comes home with her all in one waterproof muddy, which I always think is a good sign of fun! The staff are very friendly and helpful and my daughter has always loved it there. The food is cooked on site and there are an excellent menu and range of food. The nursery also provides all nappies, wipes, cream, sun cream and pain relief which is great not having to worry about taking these things in and them running out.

Since starting in the baby room 8 months ago, my daughter has come along in leaps and bounds. She settled in fantastically, the staff were really helpful and friendly, and I really felt like she would be treated like one of their family. Now in the Tweenie room, she is still doing really well and gets the same great level of care. They communicate well with me about any issues and have taken on board everything I’ve asked them to regarding my daughter. The nursery has great facilities, and I particularly like their emphasis on outdoor play and am looking forward to when my daughter has access to the Forest School.

I particularly enjoy the time they spend outdoors and the creative activities the children get involved with. My daughter has been at Handkerchief Nursery from 9 months old, she is now 4 years old. Since day one, my daughter has continued to hit her milestones with the support and aid of Handkerchief, she has developed so well and even at times where extra care was required to achieve her milestones, plans were put in place by the nursery and implemented. My daughter loves it here, and I don't say that lightly, all staff are consistent in their behaviours and values, even as they move through to different classes as they get older. This nursery and the staff have become her extended family, feeling safe, protected and aided tremendously in her learning and most importantly now getting her ready for school next year! I cannot recommend this nursery and the staff highly enough and I will be very sad when my daughter has to move on, they have been an integral part of her life at the beginning and I cannot thank them enough for adding such high value to her.

Review of Handkerchief Day Nursery

My daughter attended here from 19 months to 4 years old. She loved the staff and despite severe separation anxiety as a baby/toddler settled quickly and enjoyed going and seeing the staff and her friends 3 days a week. The transition was made especially easy by the staff. My 19-month-old son now attends even though it is now out of my way to take him there due to school drop off and my commute to work. But I couldn’t imagine sending him anywhere else and am very happy with the care he receives. He is especially fond of his key worker who is very caring towards him and makes me feel happy leaving him there.

The staff are all really friendly and caring and often come up with creative ideas for the children. The outdoor space is great and my eldest child loves forest school! There hasn't been much consistency with management over the last few months but the deputy manager and room seniors are good. Although there is not much they can do, they could do with a little more space in the preschool rooms and cloakroom space.

After moving to Handkerchief Day Nursery my daughter settled in really quickly which was mostly due to the amazing staff. They are all so friendly and have great relationships with the children, my daughter runs in and hugs the staff when she arrives. There is also great communication with the parents, I love getting emails with photos of what my daughter is doing while I'm at work. The facilities the nursery have are fantastic, the children have a huge outside space with lots of natural areas to explore, including visiting the chickens! My daughter loves the food and snacks and often ends up having two portions! I would definitely recommend Handkerchief Day Nursery to anyone!

Our journey with Handkerchief first started 2.5 years ago when my daughter was 10 months old, she is now nearly 3 years old and still absolutely loves going to nursery. Our son started around 6 months ago and he too loves going to nursery. My daughter has made some strong relationships with the staff and with fellow children. From the moment she started I was impressed with not only the variety of activities on offer, but also the amount they did with the children. One of the biggest things for me when choosing a nursery was how much outdoor space was on offer and at Handkerchief, it's a lot! My daughter particularly loves forest school and the children are outside most days which to me is so important. The staff at Handkerchief are a credit to the business, they are always so loving and caring and when you are trusting these individuals to look after your children it's extremely important that they genuinely care and at Handkerchief they do.
