Nutrition

We believe food is fundamental to healthy growth, happy minds, and positive lifelong habits. In the earliest years, what children eat does not just nourish their bodies, it shapes taste preferences, supports brain development, and lays the foundations for long-term health.

Why early years nutrition matters

The first five years are critical

During this time, children are forming taste preferences and food habits that last a lifetime. Every meal is a chance to support neural pathways in the brain, helping learning, concentration, and emotional wellbeing. Early exposure to wholesome, varied foods makes children more confident, curious eaters later in life.

More than just meals

Healthy eating is part of everyday nursery life. Working with the Soil Association, we create calm, social dining experiences that encourage independence through shared mealtimes and self-service. Food is presented as something enjoyable, accessible, and explored together.

Exploring food through play

Children are supported to try new foods through play, curiosity, and gentle encouragement. Our grow-your-own initiatives give children first-hand experience of where food comes from, building familiarity, respect, and excitement around fresh ingredients.

Our approach to nutrition

Our seasonal menus

Freshly prepared, every day

All meals are freshly prepared on site each day using quality produce. Our seasonal menus follow a three-week rotation, covering breakfast, morning and afternoon snacks, lunch, and tea. Menus are varied, balanced, and rich in fruit and vegetables to support healthy development.

Created with expert guidance

Our menus are developed by our nursery chefs alongside accredited Child Nutritional Therapist Louise Mercieca. Together, they have shaped recipes that support healthy brain development, strengthen immunity during seasonal changes, reduce sugar intake to protect dental health, and help children form positive, lifelong relationships with food.

Quality ingredients

We source ingredients that adhere to Food for Life criteria. This means using meat from farms that meet UK animal welfare standards, sustainably sourced fish, free-range eggs, and ingredients free from unnecessary additives. At least 75% of our menu is freshly prepared, and currently we are at 95%.

Beyond compliance

All menus meet and go beyond the Early Years Foundation Stage nutrition guidance. We do not just meet requirements, we aim to lead the way in early years nutrition.

Supporting weaning

We know weaning can feel daunting for families. Our carefully planned weaning menu introduces new tastes and textures gradually, working in partnership with parents to support a smooth, confident transition and positive early food experiences.

Designed for inclusion

Our menus are designed with inclusion at heart. We work closely with families to meet dietary, cultural, and allergy requirements, offering alternative options so every child can enjoy mealtimes safely and confidently.

Colour-coded plate system

Our colour-coded plate system allows children and staff to clearly identify individual food needs. Children quickly learn which colour plate their food will be served on, and this process enables our chefs and practitioners to follow a robust check and double-check system.

No nuts policy

All nurseries operate a strict No Nuts Policy. We take careful steps to ensure there are no nuts or nut traces in any of our food, minimising risk and supporting a safe environment for all children.

Food safety

Food safety is a priority across all our nurseries. Teams receive regular training and follow clear hygiene procedures in line with statutory requirements. Kitchen environments are routinely reviewed to ensure food is prepared and served safely, supporting children's health, wellbeing, and care at all times.
